Message in a Bottle

Today after the spouses and partners of the International directors, who are in back to back meetings most of week, visited The Ulster Folk & Transport Museum they made their way to Cultra House to take part in a local service activity - Message in a Bottle. The activity revolved around preparing the messages in a bottle for distribution to local lions clubs around District 133 - Ireland.

The Message in a Bottle scheme allows anyone to request a bottle. In the bottle they'll find a medical information sheet for completion by the recipient and two easily identifiable stickers which are placed in the inside their home - normally on the inside of front and back property doors. The bottle itself with the completed medical form is then stored in the kitchen refrigerator. Logic behind this is everyone will have a fridge in their kitchen. Emergency responders are trained to look out for these stickers which indicates the patient takes part in the scheme and their vital medical information can be located in the bottle in the fridge. This scheme helps aid in a quicker diagnosis and faster treatment of the patient as the emergency services can see pre-existing illnesses and current medications detailed on the form.

Today Antrim Coast Lions Club demonstrated the setup and packing of each bottle so it's ready for distribution. Lead by Lion Lori Sheehan, wife of President Brian E. Sheehan, spouses, partners and family of the board of international directors packed over 2000 individual Message in a Bottles.

International Childhood Cancer Day

Today (15/02/2023) is International Childhood Cancer Day

It is a global campaign of Lions International to raise awareness about childhood cancer, and to express support for children, adolescents and young adults with cancer, the survivors and their families and the families of those taken too soon by this disease.

Together, as an organisation of over 1.4 million members, we raise our voices to create greater understanding of the challenges faced by children, young people, survivors and their families.

Worldwide, it’s an opportunity to advocate for equal access to treatment and improved outcomes for children and young people, wherever they live in the world.

Every year, more than 400,000 children and adolescents below 20, are diagnosed with cancer. The rate of survival depends on the region, with 80% survival in most High Income Countries but as low as 20% only in Low and Middle Income Countries.

The Target Goal of the WHO Global Childhood Cancer Initiative is to eliminate all pain and suffering of children fighting cancer and achieve at least 60% survival for all children diagnosed with cancer around the world by 2030.

This represents an approximate doubling of the current cure rate and will save an additional one million children’s lives over the next decade.

Urgent Appeal

When a powerful earthquake hit Turkey and Syria on Feb. 5, homes crumbled to the ground, hundreds of other buildings collapsed, thousands of lives were lost, with numbers increasing each day, tens of thousands of people were displaced, and communities were changed forever.

When natural disasters strike, Lions are among the first to answer. Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) quickly responded to empower their service by awarding a Major Catastrophe Grant to Lions in Turkey. Grant funds will enable Lions to provide immediate, short- and long-term relief to victims of one of the largest earthquakes to hit the region in more than 100 years.

"The devastation that this earthquake and the subsequent aftershocks brought is heartbreaking, and those affected by this disaster will need support in recovering and rebuilding for many days, weeks, months, and even years ahead," said LCIF Chairperson Douglas X. Alexander.

With this funding, Lions will participate in the immediate and short-term clean-up and repair efforts and work with local organisations on long-term reconstruction projects, filling any gaps in service.

"Lions live and serve in the communities most impacted, and we will be there to support the people there as long as they need us," Alexander said. “Funding from LCIF will help us make an even bigger difference for the people who’ve experienced so much loss during this unfathomable disaster.”

According to International Disaster Database, natural disasters have increased by nearly 400% globally over the last 50 years. LCIF Disaster Relief Grants are designed to support Lions-led relief efforts during various stages of disaster relief operations. Lions are key figures in their communities and play a vital role in this process. They are responsible for assessing the needs in their district to maximise their relief efforts. LCIF grants enable Lions volunteers to have a greater impact in their communities.

Second Hand September

Have you heard of SECOND HAND SEPTEMBER??

It is a campaign encouraging people to avoid buying new clothing for the entire 30 days of the month. Every week 11 million items of clothing end up in landfill. Throwaway fashion is putting increasing pressure on our planet and its people - it is unsustainable.

Now there's something you can do to help. Join Second Hand September and pledge to say no to new clothes for 30 days. The campaign, organised by the charity Oxfam, aims to raise awareness of the environmental impact of fashion.

So if you want to do your bit, skip the impulse buys this September and if you need something new for work or for a night out, come and have a browse in our Charity Shop!!  You never know what you might find.
